Incorporated on June 1, 1942 as a state owned company and privatized on May7, 1997, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD is one of the most important and productive business groups in Brazil, with international operations and customers in more than 30 countries.
CVRD today maintains commercial offices in North America (New York), Europe (Brussels) and Asia (Tokyo and Shanghai), the locations of its principal customers.

CVRD is the largest diversified mining company of the Americas and the world"s largest producer and exporter of iron ore and pellets.

CVRD produces manganese, ferroalloys, gold, kaolin and potash and has relevant stakes in bauxite, alumina, aluminum, steel and fertilizers companies. It has world class mines, with long reserve life, high quality products and low costs. Its diversified line of high quality iron are
products covers all steel production routes. As Brazil's largest holder of mineral rights, has large deposits of bauxite, copper, gold, kaolin and other minerals. It owns and operates two highly efficient railroad networks linked to automated ports and terminal facilities, making it a
major cargo transportation player in Brazil. CVRD owns stakes and/or operates other railroads and maritime terminals. CVRD is developing five copper projects, which will begin production in the next two to five years and will place the company in a significant position in the world
copper market.

In 2001, the company began to consider energy as a core business. CVRD currently hold stakes in nine hydroelectric power generation projects, two of which have started operations.

Privatized in May 1997, CVRD's shares are traded in Reais (Bovespa Common:VALE3; Preferred:VALE5), US Dollars (NYSE) and Euros (LATIBEX). The listing of preferred shares in LATIBEX (XVALP) happened in February 2000 and in NYSE (RIO PR) in June 2000.

CVRD's common stock began listing simultaneously on March 21 in Latibex (XVALO) and NYSE (RIO).
